The Algarve remains a beautiful and peaceful coast – more
akin to Spain’s Costa de la Luz than the busier, more boisterous
Costa del Sol. Beaches are long and sandy with ochre-coloured
cliffs and pretty coves.

The coast can be divided into three sections: East, West and
Central Algarve. Generally, the further east from Faro airport
you travel, the lower priced the property. The Western Algarve
stretches from Portimão to Sagres, taking in Lagos and
Praia da Luz, and is greener and less developed than Central Algarve,
which runs from Faro to Albufeira in the west.
Since the opening of the Via do Infante motorway from Faro to
Lagos in 2003, the western region has opened up to foreign investors,
with many high quality developments springing up around Lagos.
The central stretch is the most popular and developed tourist
region in Portugal and includes the exclusive holiday/golf villages
of Quinta do Lago and similarly upmarket Vale do Lobo.
Eastern Algarve, whose main town is Tavira, is the least developed
and crowded, running from Faro east to the Spanish border. Here
you will find some of the most beautiful and tranquil beaches,
traditional fishing towns and offshore sandbanks which are popular
with sunbathers.
